Greek Traditions — Family
The strongest tradition of a Greek household in Greece, or anywhere in the world, is to have and raise a family.
The family is the cornerstone of a vibrant and fruitful life.
The word “family” in the Greek language translates to OIKOGENIA. OIKOS, the root of the ancient word, means the family and the family’s house. GENOS- the second part of the word means a group of people who are related.
Our Greek tradition of family transcends across all borders and cultures because the emphasis is on unity and mutual support.
In our culture, both ancient and modern, it is common for adult children to live with their parents until they get married. I did that, and so did my husband.
In some households, but not all, multi generations live under one roof, and share many responsibilities from cooking, to cleaning and paying the bills.
From birth to today I have dedicated my entire life to my family, both nuclear and extended.
Things we do together with our nuclear family and extended family include gathering for large Sunday dinners to share a meal and maintain our family bonds.
Last week, for my birthday, I invited our Koumbaroi, relations from marriage and baptism, to celebrate with me at a Greek restaurant to eat, drink and dance in celebration of all of us. The evening allowed for us to get caught up and share stories of our children’s updates. This way we stay connected to our family as we break bread and toast each other.
Another thing we do together as a family is to attend church on Sunday. This outing is not random or infrequent, but instead we go to church every Sunday. Sunday is a day of spiritual nourishment, getting caught up, resting and preparing for the week ahead.
This holiday season, what are you and your family doing to celebrate one another?
For me, I will give my family my time.
Time to rejoice, time to reflect, time to renew and time to love unconditionally through food, faith and one another.
In the end, set your heart upon the family unit to help one another, support one another, grow together and teach one another the value and meaning of life.
Life is richer spending it with people you love, a family.
Sending you filakia- Kisses.
